Description
This is a 1928 Conn New Wonder "Chu Berry" Alto Saxophone with its original case and original "Eagle Trademark" mouthpiece. This instrument is sold for REPAIR, AS-IS. It will need a full repad to function.
All the keys move and turn as they should, and all the parts are there.
Only one roller is missing in the left hand pinky table.
This sax has sat in storage for decades and still has almost all of the original, 94 year old pads still on it! Only a few were replaced throughout its life. The original pads on all New Wonders came with no resonator, and had just a center stitch (as shown in the pictures) to prevent the center of the pad from sagging since there were no resonators used in that era to prevent the center of the pad from sagging. The original New Wonder pads also have a metal disk inside, under the leather, that Conn used for resonance. A few springs are missing on the sax. I was able to play test the sax, using rubber bands in place of the missing springs, and it plays roughly to about low Eb or D, as-is, with the original pads. However, as stated above, the sax needs a fresh repad, since the original pads are almost 100 years old and the leather is dry, leaky, and fragile.
The finish is raw brass. It appears the lacquer was removed/stripped at some point in the saxophone's life.
With a full repad and adjustment it will make a great horn, with that big, classic Conn sound!
