CONN NWII alto saxophone203xxx Made in 1928This Conn alto saxophone is an interesting sax. From 1918 to 1930, Conn made more or less the same saxes, just refining them little by little. They changed the keys, they changed the pads, they changed the engraving on the front, they changed the neck, they changed everything. They tried different things and kept the things that made the saxes work better, sound better, and last longer.
By the time this sax was made, 1928, they had really turned into terrific horns. This was the best sax you could buy in 1928, and still a pro sax today. Conn saxes are known for their big bold sound, and this one is a terrific example of that.
This sax has a fancy engraving on the bell, and all new everything. The pads are White Kangaroo Leather from Music Medic, the most expensive and strongest kind. They look great with the silver sax! Over 0 just for the pads. After days spent cleaning and polishing, I wanted all of the materials to be the best I could find. Also the cork and felt bumpers are all new and the key heights have been set so it plays in tune.
This alto saxophone has a straight body and good silverplate for the most part. When I got this, it was really tarnished. Actually, it sat in the shop for quite a while because I knew it was going to be a lot of work to clean it up. And it was. Most of the silver cleaned up really well. There are a few spots where I did not want to polish the silver too much so there are still spots. You can see all of that in the fotos. There is no evidence of repairs, no dents anywhere, and it is strong as new. Itis not in mint condition, but it looks terrific and plays very well. While I had all of the keys off, I sprayed clear lacquer on the keys and the body so it will not get all tarnished again. This turned out really fantastic, as you can see in the fotos. It is not all shiny and bright, but it has hints of some of the tarnish spots. The clear lacquer gives it a warm look that does not come through in the pictures. Another unique feature this sax has is the gold wash bell. The inside of the bell is actually gold plated! Super cool looking. One more thing you can see on the neck is the Conn Microtuner. Usually these are broken, but this one works perfectly. When you assemble a sax, you put the mouthpiece onto the neck cork partway. Stuff it on farther to get sharper, pull it out to get flatter. The Microtuner is smarter than that! Put the mouthpiece all the way on, no guessing. Then turn the knob to move the mouthpiece in or out to tune.
Suitable for a beginner or an advanced player who just does not want to pay too much for a pro level alto saxophone with a custom look. This is a lot like the 1931 Conn I play professionally.
Comes in the original Conn hard case in good condition except that one of the latches is broken. I am trying to find another that matches so I can replace it.
