    Description

I have been creating one of a kind copper and brass weathervanes for more than 50 years in my spare time.  Now that I am retired I execute one or two highly detailed weathervanes  a year. My primary subjects are 19th century and early 20th century steam ships and locomotives. This locomotive vane is a depiction of an 1875 2-8-0 locomotive.  In the last half of the 19th century into the first quarter of the 20th century handcrafted weathervanes such as this adorned the rooftops of rural train stations.  They were almost an advertising symbol for America's fledgling railroads.  They were manufactured by such companies as J.W. Fisk, E.G. Washburn & Co., and Cushing & White.  My weathervanes are made to the same high quality and detail as the originals.  They are made to weather the elements but because of their detail, uniqueness, and cost it is highly recommended that they are displayed indoors as American folkart and to protect your investment.
This particular locomotive was scaled off of a photograph of a period engine.  Every piece is fabricated by hand which takes many hours of hand filing and fitting.  It literally takes months to complete each weathervane.  Mostly every piece is made from sheet copper, all but the drive wheels which are cast.  This one was executed in 2012.  The weather vane is a little over 27" in length and is mounted on a 2" thick solid mahogany base.  More photographs are available upon request.
Payment is due within 3 days of the close of the auction. Local pick-up is available.  Shipping cost will include insurance and is estimated to be about 0.00.  Final cost will be determined by the buyer's zipcode.
