Vintage 1914 FRANK HOLTON Alto Sax w/Original Case. Sax Serial #28114.
According to all the serial number charts this is a 1914 sax. To me it looks more like being built in the 30's with the high F key. The sax also has a couple right palm keys (pics #1 & #4) that are very interesting. It's been cleaned and adjusted, and plays very good from top to bottom with a very nice, clear tone on the included Rico B5 mouthpiece. Pads, springs, felts, and corking have been replaced where needed with the existing pads from good to very good condition (mostly very good). Cosmetically, I believe this horn was lacquered many years after being manufactured. A lot of these older saxophones were sold bare brass and later lacquered; I think this is one. The beautiful thing about the lacquer job is that it has now crystalized into an iridescent coating that is breathtaking in the sunlight (pics #1, 4, 5 & 8). There is very little scuffing, some small scratches, and a mild dent on the bow with some small miscellaneous dings on the bow and bell. A really fine vintage Holton. The case is very sturdy with all latches and hinges functioning. The interior has some black stains in the red velvet - most likely from age, but there are no smells. Included with the case are a new green microfiber polishing cloth, a white vintage neckstrap, a black plastic end plug, and the Rico Royal Graftonite B5 mouthpiece w/ligature, cap, and new Rico Plasticover reed. A real vintage beauty!
